While the Haiti Deaf Academy will be staffed by Haitians, close monitoring of the success of the home by its western founders will ensure that the children are cared for in a safe and compassionate manner.
Kathryn Montoya, Haiti Deaf Academy founder and Missionary to the Deaf, will serve as the Haiti Deaf Academy Executive Director. With over 30 years of experience of impacting the deaf world wide, Kathryn is committing her time and energy to this project. Much of her last 24 months has been spent in Haiti, providing pastor training and laying the foundation for better education for the deaf children with whom she worked. Her passion for the Haiti Deaf Academy grew out of too many first hand experiences with deaf children in Haiti having no access to or hope for an education, followed by a lifetime of dependence for some and starvation for others.
Having adopted a deaf daughter with no communication skills, she knows the value of early development of communication skills and education taught in the deaf child’s heart language, sign language.
Kathryn has a MS in Deaf Education, a BS in Educational Interpreting and is a nationally certified interpreter with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID). Her RID certificates include, NIC, CI, CT.
Kathryn welcomes your questions or requests for more information about the Haiti Deaf Academy.
